Florida Bookkeeper Heather Hushelpeck Sentenced to Two Years for Embezzling $280K from Oral Surgeon

Heather Hushelpeck

Heather Hushelpeck, a former Gainesville bookkeeper, was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation for stealing more than $280,000 from her employer.

Hushelpeck, 46, was arrested last February after being fired months earlier from her bookkeeping job at oral surgeon Dr. Marvin Slott’s office, according to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. Hushelpeck also deleted the bookkeeping software the business used, the report said.

Slott fired her after she could not explain credit card transactions, the report said.

While talking with an employee, Hushelpeck reportedly began crying and said she had stolen money by writing checks and forging Slott’s signature, using credit card refunds and charge backs and by taking money that patients paid.

Sheriff’s investigators originally reported about $150,000 was missing and unaccounted for, but the circuit judge granted a restitution order for an additional $130,000.

How did Heather Hushelpeck do it?

Hushelpeck had been miscoding checks inputted into the bookkeeping software, according to a complaint filed by Slott’s attorney.
